The arrangement had been simple, and safe: Sam's parents would see him on to the train in London, and Sam's uncle would meet him at the station in Carlisle. But when Sam rings home to say that he has arrived safely, he isn't telling the whole truth. He has known all along that his uncle won't be there. He takes a taxi to his uncle's lonely cottage and finds it locked and silent.
